Conclusions: In patients with a very recent diagnosis of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, the retinal vessels diameters do not differ compared with individuals of similar age and blood pressure. However, the AVR index correlates with age and nighttime BP, highlighting the important contribution of the latter in early target organ damage in this population.

    This reminds of what I learned in med school. Patients with type 1 DM should see their eye doctor every ~5 yrs for screening. For patient with type 2 DM, they should start seeing their eye doctor as soon as they are diagnosed with diabetes as retinal changes have already been present and evolving years ago.
