Attachment Representation Moderates the Effectiveness of Behavioral Parent Training Techniques for Children with ADHD: Evidence from a Randomized Controlled Microtrial - PubMed

Behavioral parent training is an evidence-based intervention for children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), but knowledge on the differential effects of behavioral techniques for specific subgroups of children is very limited. Attachment representations of children with ADHD may ...

Relevance:This was the first study examining attachment as a moderator of behavioral techniques for ADHD. If replicated, the findings of this study can be used for treatment development and tailoring.

    • Conclusion: “This study highlights the importance of studying attachment as potential moderator of behavioral strategies used by parents of children with ADHD. The results of our study tentatively suggest that in BPT [behavioral pattern training] for children with ADHD, behavioral parent training techniques are differentially effective based on attachment representation. Replication of our findings is warranted, as more knowledge about moderating effects may guide future treatment development and tailoring.”
    • BPT is an evidence-based strategy for ADHD, but it remains to be elucidated its effects on subgroups of children, including those children with different attachment representations.
    • Attachment representations could impact how receptive children are to parenting changes (i.e., BPT).
    • In the current study, Dutch researchers examined the efficacy of BPT with regard to attachment representation in 74 children with ADHD.
    • According to the authors, a strength of the study was the employment of story-stem procedures to assess attachment representations in lieu of self-reported questionnaires/observational methods.
    • Limitations of the current study include a lack of baseline measurement of parenting, the fact that parents received the training and rated outcome, and the brief follow-up period.
