Biomonitoring of Indoor Air Fungal or Chemical Toxins with Caenorhabditis elegans nematodes

Biomonitoring of Indoor Air Fungal or Chemical Toxins with Caenorhabditis elegans nematodes

Source : https://doi.org/10.3390/pathogens12020161

Bad indoor air quality due to toxins and other impurities can have a negative impact on human well-being, working capacity and health. Therefore, reliable methods to monitor the health risks...

Liquid-based or airborne exposure of nematodes to mycotoxins, chemical agents or damaged building materials reproducibly resulted in time- and dose-dependent fluorescent responses, which could be quantitated by either microscopy or spectrometry. Thus, the C. elegans nematodes present an easy, ethically acceptable and comprehensive in vivo model...

Susceptibility of Fat Tissue to SARS-CoV-2 Infection in Female hACE2 Mouse Model

Susceptibility of Fat Tissue to SARS-CoV-2 Infection in Female hACE2 Mouse Model

Source : https://doi.org/10.3390/ijms24021314

The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is a highly contagious viral illness caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2). COVID-19 has had a catastrophic effect globally causing millions of deaths worldwide...

Our study revealed for the first time that: (a) viral loads in adipose tissue and the lungs differ between males and females in hACE2 mice; (b) an inverse relationship exists between the viral loads in the lungs and adipose tissue, and it differs between males and females; and (c) CoV-2 infection alters immune signaling and cell death signaling...

Acute Phrenic Neuropathy and Diaphragmatic Dysfunction as a Complication of COVID-19: A Report of Four Cases

Acute Phrenic Neuropathy and Diaphragmatic Dysfunction as a Complication of COVID-19: A Report of Four Cases

Among the neurological manifestations associated with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), neuropathies are rare. They have been associated with prolonged prostration and metabolic failure in a seriously ill patient. We present...

Highlights

  • A DNA-biosensor was integrated in a microfluidic device for direct SARS-CoV-2 RNA detection in human saliva samples.
  • The DNA/RNA duplex was detected via fluorescence measurements, resulting in a limit of detection of 10 aM.
  • The specificity was validated over saliva samples containing MERS coronavirus.
  • The designed sensing platform...

Introduction AIMS Myasthenia Gravis (MG) is an autoimmune neuromuscular disease in which patients suffer from recurrent exacerbation. There are insufficient data measuring the effects of the resources employed before and...

Discussion: Plasmapheresis, intubation, and male sex were associated with increased LOS in acute MG exacerbation. Intubation appears to be the strongest predictor of LOS. Those with previous thymectomy had shorter hospital stays. The role of thymectomy in the acute setting merits further analysis.
