Improving Statin Adherence in Patients at Risk for Cardiovascular Disease
US Pharm. 2021;46(2):6-12. ABSTRACT: Lipid-lowering medications have been shown to be efficacious, but adherence can be challenging in patients who are at risk for cardiovascular disease. It is critical for pharmacists to utilize tools in their practice to help patients attain better adherence outcomes, as nonadherence to evidence-based pharmacotherapy has been associated with excess morbidity and mortality.

LYNN CRONIN5yrOne thing I think we can do better with initiating statins is, when appropriate, use the "start low and go slow" mentality rather than begin with high dose/high potency statin. Regardless of the end goal, statin myalgias are real and if you are losing even a small fraction of willing patients by exposing them to myalgias straight away, you may have lost those people forever. I learned this the hard way and now almost always start off with low dosing. Every-other-day dosing captures all but a small fraction of statin intolerant individuals and improves compliance significantly in my experience.
