Moderate and high intensity exercise improves glycaemia, blood pressure and body composition in menopausal women with type 2 diabetes

• Post-menopause, women are at elevated risk for developing type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), as well as heart disease. Although regular physical activity Is protective vs chronic disease, specific benefit of the intensity and type of such exercise remains to be elucidated.
• The researchers had 98 participants engage in functional training three times a week. They measured anthropometric data, blood pressure, heart rate (HR), plasma glucose, glycated hemoglobin, total cholesterol, HDL-C, LDL-C, and triglyceride (TG) levels, and found that functional training decreased glycated hemoglobin and blood pressure levels and improved body composition in moderate- and high-intensity arms, whereas high-intensity training enhanced HDL-C and TG levels. Of note, LDL-C lowered only in MI patients.
