• Conclusion/Relevance: “The combination of multiple clusters for metabolic risk factors trajectories had additive effects on risks for all-cause and expanded CVD mortality in patients with type 2 DM. Our findings provided information for health professionals to stratify the patients’ risks of mortality when they monitor individual’s metabolic risk factors and deliver lifestyle or medication interventions to persons at high risks in diabetic care.”
• In the current study, Chinese researchers stratified different patients with type 2 diabetes according to individual trajectories of metabolic risk factors into three clusters, with unfavorable clusters linked to high risks of death.
• The trajectories shared mechanisms that explained links to mortality, including insulin resistance, atherosclerosis progression, vascular endothelial dysfunction, inflammation, hyperglycemia-induced downstream consequences, and oxidative-stress generation.
• Strengths of the study included a large, robust hospital-based database. Limitations included measurement errors due to self-reported data and that covariates were measured only at baseline. Furthermore, the observational nature of the study made results less generalizable.
